One of the final work reviews I received on my project 'Living for Another' was from Tom Duffield. Inspired by his personal projects about his father and himself, I wanted to discover the similarities myself and Tom shared when creating and producing personal projects. Tom reviewed my self-bound book and professionally bound book, along with my large scale fabric print for my end of year degree show exhibition.
Review of the book ~
The use of the theatrical trip-tych (curtains) presents an act of the true stories included in the work. The performative experience adds to the act of playing a role, as much as the mothers are In their lives.
Having the project In a book format brings all the elements together in a material object such as; quotes, scenes, portraits, environments, objects and performance.
The use of photographic techniques such as out of focus imagery mimics the true emotions that the mothers felt. Allowing the viewer to feel involved and part of that reality, experiencing the visualise in which the mothers describe. Particularly the out of focus full bleed baby photograph, even as a man, makes you almost feel like you are the mother.
'Living for Another' aligns well with the subject matter within the book.
Finally, the reoccurring strategies of the book sequence and layout is extremely strong and creative, creating a rhythm when viewing the phonebook and allowing for breaks to make the viewer encounter every section.
Review of Fabric Print ~
The use of material refers back to the book, linking the two outcomes together. The material is hinting towards the baby still, yet the photograph is solely about the female on her own.
By making the most out of the material, allowing it to free hang, may resemble the reality of a baby, constantly moving and changing.
Things to think about ~
If a pole was placed in the bottom hem would it restrain the print and prevent the natural movements it will have in an exhibition space.
Titling the lone image would strengthen the work, giving it an identity.
Possibly for the exhibition I could think about printing a couple or few images from my series in the book to be placed alongside the fabric print.
