Carlotta Cardana

A commercial and editorial photographer, being a successful freelance pre-covid and a commissioned artist for magazine companies.

Carlotta started her practice by doing freelance work with her brother. Creating a documentary project in which she developed her style and combined research into her project for the first time. The images from this project were taking in Argentina, with not much going on there she struggled and unfortunately could not published the work, however the project did not go to waste as it helped her to grow her portfolio showcasing a variety of photographic skills in preparation for commissions.

Moving to Mexico Carlotta started to work for a variety of magazine companies. She loved to work on large format and film cameras as that is what she learnt in school. However the magazine companies required her to use a DSLR, which worked better financially for her, but this also removed her passion and love for the analogue camera.

So she then moved to London, starting on personal project with her film camera to represent her true photographic identity, photographed Italians in Europe was a close project to her as it was her story also. This project then lead to the creation of a portfolio that she loved, but this came at a price due to the film and development of her work.

Her bodies of work normally start and are created when she captures one image she loves, then she pursues it further. During the whole time of beginning as a freelance she entered her images into competitions, and attended portfolio reviews to get her work noticed. The 'Modern Couples' project was her most successful project to date as it was entered into exhibitions, gaining her publicity and more commissioned work.

Treating the new commissions as personal work, using her film camera and same processes, she soon realised that to make money and earn a living from being a commissioned photographer she would have to use a DSLR due the to expenses of film that was never covered by the payment from the companies.

What I found most interning about Carlotta is how she only created work when she captured an image she really loved. Sparking her passion to create a whole series on and around that specific subject or story. Being a very honest speaker she also discussed how it is important to stick to what you love to create but do this well and smart to match the needs and demands of the commissioners. Also having people skills are the most important skills to have as it allows you to understand people, know how they want to be presented and connecting with them during a shoot, allows for future works and a good relationship with a wide variety of clients.
