Background ~
Sophie Traynor is a product, fashion, food and beauty photographer. During her visit to the University of Huddersfield she put on a live workshop on product and portrait photography.
‘Being able to do everything has given me access to a lot of jobs, it’s saved companies from having to hire more than one photographer’
She described how in a perfect world as a photographer you would just stick to your favourite genre of photography, however with clients wanting more for less, due to social media trends on TikTok and Instagram, she has adapted her skill set and shoots all genres to elevate her business, promoting herself even more. A lot of her commercial work is shot at a 3/4 angle with a clean and clinical set up, best suiting the current trends. I asked Sophie if she plans to change her set up style and she replied by saying 'I prefer to shoot like that, but if styles changed Id adapt'. Which Is advice that I will take on board, as this ensures you have the skill set and flexibility to open your business out to a wider audience.
Style and Technique ~
To begin her demonstration Sophie started with one hard light source on half power, a tripod and a 24-105mm lens, tethered to capture one software. Stating how important it is to use a tripod for product photography, helping to eliminate issues you face, allowing microscopic adjustments, only visible when tethering.
‘I’m a one step kinda gal’
Enforcing that there is no need to rush, even while working for clients is crucial. Building up the lighting and the set to obtain the final result you want or the client wants takes time and accuracy.
