What I found effective from Peter Puklus's website is the use of side scrolling. This is slightly different to the standard up and down scroll, which I believe allows continuous engagement, while anticipating the next imagery with sneak peaks due to the images not having static lock points on the screen.
The whole website is very detailed and easy to guide yourself through due to the contents page having so much detail. However, when accessing this site on a mobile phone there becomes a lot of negative space as it only fills a 1/3 of the screen, but this can be resolved holding the phone landscape.
